How brilliant is this? Graphic Designer Huw Gwilliam re-designed a bunch of classic records based on Penguin’s signature style. I look forward seeing what records he does next.

Phoenix: Lisztomania

Phoenix – Lisztomania from Discobelle on Vimeo.

No, this has nothing to do with Phoenix, Arizona, but if you’d like to make a connection, do go ahead. Phoenix is a sweet band from Paris, France. The video for Lisztomania comes from their fourth studio album called Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix due May 25. The album is co-produced/mixed by Philippe Zdar who also mixed Phoenix’s debut studio album, United.

I’m not one to force music on people, but I suggest you at least give them a listen. I can’t tell you how it is I am able to listen to their full album now, but I may be able to point you somewhere.

How The Fanzine Refused To Die

picture-56

In the age of Blogger, Live Journal and other online formats for non-professional music commentary, the fanzine ought be on its last legs, a relic of another era, as antiquated as an electric typewriter. Yet strangely zines are holding their ground. People still make them. And it’s not just die-hard veterans from the golden age of the fanzine (approximately 1977 to 1994, punk rock to riot grrl) but younger people who’ve never known a world without email and the web. Although it’s hard to quantify, it feels like the fanzine is making a resurgence in the face of digital culture, just like that other analogue format, vinyl.

Kris Moyes

Despite some people calling him a hipster and not being blown away by his work. I think Kris Moyes rocks. Who cares if he is a hipster if he has an interesting vision anyway.

I first looked him up after hearing that he had been in Mexico City making a video for Heart it Races by Architecture in Helsinki. The video was filmed in one of my favorite Mexican locations, Xochimilco (pronounced so-chee-meel-koh). Yes Mark, a Mexican location.

Born in 1978, Moyes spent his youth drawing Lebanese pregnant men-women with hairy backs and having nightmares about satellites. He studied Time Based Art at Sydney’s College of Fine Arts where he earned a colossal reputation for his provocative and transgressive video art. Finding the gallery environment constrictive, Moyes eventually found solace with the democratic medium of music video.

Since 2005, Kris Moyes has been making videos for bands such as Wolfmother, Franz Ferdinand, Cut Copy, Hercules and Love Affair, Architecture in Helsinki and Beck.

One of my favorite videos by Moyes is Beck’s, the only scientologyst that I’m not scared of, Youthless video. Take a look if you haven’t, and if you have, watch again.
