Flaming Lips’ Christmas on Mars (finally) released

The Flaming Lips, who have been working on Christmas on Mars for what feels like an eternity, have finally set a firm release date.

The film tells the story of the experiences of Major Syrtis during the first Christmas on a newly-colonized Mars. Coyne has described the film as “Maybe Eraserhead or Dead Man crossed with some kind of fantasy and space aspects, like The Wizard of Oz and maybe A Space Odyssey, except done without real actors or money, and set at Christmas-time.”

Score one for the MPAA

As the story goes, the MPAA complained about the theatrical poster for Kevin Smith’s new film on the left, so he responded with the poster on the right.

The poster on the right makes the movie seem much more curious. However, having never seen it, I may not be the best judge.

The world’s largest record collection is unsellable

The Archive from Sean Dunne on Vimeo.

Paul Mawhinney was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Over the years he has amassed what has become the world’s largest record collection. Due to health issues and a struggling record industry Paul is being forced to sell his collection.

The collection is estimated to be worth 50 million; his asking price is 3 million. He’s received no serious offers.

Shouldn’t this be a national treasure?

I found this image gallery of a project about taking pictures of old boom-boxes and it reminded me, yet again, of something I’ve noticed that’s started to happen.

Nerds prepare: Lion’s Gate to release a Zork movie

UPDATE: Hey, did you know gullible isn’t in the dictionary? My bad.

And, of course, Morgan Freeman is narrating.

From what I can gather, Zork was one of the first interactive fiction computer games. Players navigate through the Zork world by entering text commands. The movie, expected to be released in 2009, is set in a first-person perspective. It will be filmed in full text video. Read more. →

Hoverboard

I have to admit, I spend a lot of time looking for random finds on Ebay.
Usually I look for DEVO collectible items or Vintage Mickey Mouse t-shirts.

Objectified: the new Helvetica

Gary Hustwit just announced the follow-up documentary to last year’s Helvetica, which brought public attention to the obsessive world of typography.

I’m quite excited to see that Andrew Blauvelt is listed as a contributor; we were lucky to interview him for Issue 1 of Fill/Stroke magazine, as well. He must be very busy these days. Read more. →
