Computer Animation of Helicopter Tragedy
Kitchen Sink Studios, Adria’s place of employment, was recently asked to develop a video re-enactment of a helicopter crash involving two local television news copters.
It was a day that will forever live in the minds of Phoenix residents, when an unthinkable tragedy took the lives of four people who seemed like family members to many in the city.
On July 27, 2007, two television news helicopters crashed into each other while covering a high-speed chase in central Phoenix, killing the crews in both. In the aftermath, it was difficult to determine how something like this could happen — but necessary to resolve the legal issues surrounding the crash.
That’s why Pat McGroder of Gallagher & Kennedy, which represented the victims’ families from the Channel 3 helicopter in the case (Bowerbank/Cox vs. US Helicopters, ET AL.), brought in Kitchen Sink Studios to help.
To me, this is a great example of how design can be used to help solve a real world problem. I’m sure this type of design goes unnoticed every day, but I find KSS’s involvement in this case particularly interesting.

Experimenting with form and content: William Shatner Reads Sarah Palin’s Farewell Speech
The video floating on the tubes today of William Shatner reading Sarah Palin’s resignation speech reminds me of Chip Kidd’s Form/Content experimentation when he released The Learners.
[UPDATE: NBC yanked the video from YouTube.]

The blog’s one year anniversary just passed and I missed it. July 9th is when our first post hit this site. Which makes it over 2 years since our little ‘magazine’ formed.
Just to keep you updated: Issue 1 has been scaled back to only include the interviews we did. We’ll be releasing it in the next few months, and then start publishing issues in the shorter format.
Our first issue was, at one point, over 500 pages of content and ideas. I’m not going to lie: We tried to do too much with not enough time to give it the attention it needed to be done right.
So that overwhelming need for perfection that is deep-set in the 3 of us has led to delays, changes, and at this point, the continuation of our work not coming to fruition in print form.
We’re still working on it when we can, but we are a deeply active bunch and keep finding ourselves drawn into various other endeavors. But, this WILL happen or I will get a Papyrus tattoo on my face that says “I <3 Comic Sans”
Thank you for reading this past year, we’ll keep sharing.
