10,000 Hours

picture-31

Designer Siobhan Keaney once said to me that ‘designers learn in their twenties, make their mark in their thirties, and consolidate in their forties’. When she said this, I was in my twenties and of course firmly believed that everything I produced was the best thing since sliced bread. In retrospect, there are about 2 and bit projects from my twenties that I would even consider showing anyone and the rest should be left to grow mould in the metaphorical bin. It became clear that some serious work at the design coalface was needed before standing any chance of creating anything genuinely new (and get anywhere near those 10,000 hours).

Unbelievable

picture-17

We finished this spot 15 months ago and it just aired… only in Brazil… but at least it aired! In 2007 Wieden+Kennedy selected Buck to direct this epic rock opera for Coke Zero featuring such memorable cast members as a singing bear, candy-pooping birds, an elk with sausage antlers, g-string wearing antelopes and honeycomb encrusted sheep, among many others!!

PSAid

WoodfordPSAid

I’m not really sure if Tanner wants me to post this, but I am gonna do it anyway. It makes me happy to share that our very own Tanner Woodford is slowly leaving his mark. He recently received an award for his “Cans Can’t Cash Can” campaign. The campaign was entered to the International Disaster Information’s (CIDI) 2009 PSAid: Public Service Announcements for International Disasters competition.

I may sound like his Mom, but I am really proud to see my friend and colleague recognized for his work. Woot! Woot!

Updates!

Are you wondering whats been up with the site? Whats going on with the magazine?

Well, Mr. Tanner Woodford is graduating from ASU in the next few days and we’ve all been busy with new post graduate jobs and stuff.

We started the magazine 2 years ago next month. (We’re planning an article: “Things that have happened in the time it took us to finish this first damn issue”)

Just wanted to let everyone know we’re still going to get this thing done and we appreciate your support and coming back to the site!

Fashioning Felt

picture-9

This exhibition will explore the varied new uses of felt—an ancient material, believed to be one of the earliest techniques for making textiles. Made by matting together wool fibers with humidity and friction, felting requires little technological expertise and is an extremely versatile material. The exhibition will begin with historic examples of felts, showcase innovations in handmade felts, and feature contemporary uses of industrial felt in a range of fields, including product design, fashion, architecture, and home furnishings. The exhibition is being organized by Susan Brown, assistant curator, Textiles.

Yet another reason to love the Design Museum.
