Letterpress Poster Printing

Letterpress Poster Printing from Joshua Gerken on Vimeo.

I miss doing this. The ink in your finger nails, the feel of the type, the sound of the ink touching the paper, there is no better high as far as printing goes, and I mean that in every sense of the way.

If you are a print designer and haven’t experience the beauty that is letterpress I suggest you get right to it.

Google Maps Typography

alpha-map670

Normally when people link me to things relating to Google Maps they have to do with naked people or some embarrassing moment forever captured on the internet.

However this link is a great find, I am impressed by Rhett. I can’t imagine how long it took him to find what he wanted. It makes me think of the days when we would spend hours looking through magazines with an 8cm by 8 cm square template looking for line, shape and typographic forms for Andy Weed’s Visual Communication III class.

Over the course of several months, beginning of October 2008 to April 2009, Rhett Dashwood spent some time between projects searching Google Maps hoping to discover land formations or buildings resembling letter forms. The picture above is the result of his findings limited within the state of Victoria, Australia. Amazing.

Check out the sources of his images here.

Joan Miró

471px-portrait_of_joan_miro_barcelona_1935_june_13

There are plenty of reasons to celebrate a day like today, after all, it is April 20th. I wonder how many of you celebrated with one of these, and also wonder how many others only thought of Hitler.

Instead of thinking of Hitler, a wanna be painter, I suggest you raise your glass to a real artist, Joan Miró. He was a Spanish (Catalan) painter, sculptor, and ceramist born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and an important figure in the Surrealist movement.

American Psycho: Business Card Scene

American Psycho Business Card Scene from Baran Akkus on Vimeo.

After all the scenes in Helvetica with Erik Spiekermann, this particular scene from American Psycho is hands down one of my favorites. I like to think we can all appreciate moments like this.

Phoenix: Lisztomania

Phoenix – Lisztomania from Discobelle on Vimeo.

No, this has nothing to do with Phoenix, Arizona, but if you’d like to make a connection, do go ahead. Phoenix is a sweet band from Paris, France. The video for Lisztomania comes from their fourth studio album called Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix due May 25. The album is co-produced/mixed by Philippe Zdar who also mixed Phoenix’s debut studio album, United.

I’m not one to force music on people, but I suggest you at least give them a listen. I can’t tell you how it is I am able to listen to their full album now, but I may be able to point you somewhere.

Graduate Directory 2009

219_graddir09_356x218_jt101208

Every year Wallpaper Magazine makes a selection of graduates with awesome work. Something we should all keep an eye on. Who knows, maybe one of us, you, or someone you know will be on it one day. The directory includes a selection that varies from photographers, architects, graphic and fashion designers, illustrators, perfume designers, enough to look at and drool over. Give it a look.

Ivan Sutherland’s Sketchpad

Alan Kay presents Ivan Sutherland’s Sketchpad – the first interactive graphics program, developed in 1963. Sketchpad was arguably one of most influential programs in the history of graphical user interfaces. This video makes me swoon over CS4 and feel nostalgic about early computing simultaneously.

Hudson Bec: World of YCN

ac_ycm_mountains

Someone please, take me to this magical paper land.

As part of their design for the YCN Book 0809 Hudson Bec introduced an over-arching concept to help explain who YCN are and what they do. To see more photos of the making of the world, have a look here.
