The Huffington Post is reporting “the newest bin Laden family endeavor that may raise some eyebrows”.
Yeslam bin Laden, Osama’s half-brother, has just come out with a new luxury watch for pilots called the “Aviator.” Yes, there is now a bin Laden watch aimed at pilots. I can just see the tagline now: “I don’t know about you, but nothing makes me feel safer than a bin Laden in the cockpit.” [...]
The watch itself is actually pretty interesting — it tells the exact airspeed the pilot is traveling and estimates the flight duration in case the plane’s instruments fail. And, superficially, it looks pretty cool too.
Considering Yeslam’s father was killed in a plane crash, creating an aviator watch doesn’t seem so absurd. And of course the man is entitled to do whatever he pleases and make whatever products he desires. But, on a purely business level, you’ve got to wonder about the wisdom of marketing a watch for pilots with the bin Laden name. It’s a bit like selling Pol Pot designer glasses or an Amherst line of blankets.
The watch costs between 10,000-25,000$. I find it pricey, largely unappealing and somewhat creepy. I think I’ll pass.

Architect’s Journal has recently uncovered images and details on the recently deceased Jan Kaplicky’s final project. Via Design Boom:
The building is a concert hall in ãeské budejovice, czech republic and will begin construction in 2010. The project was first revealed late last year. The building features a dark and undulating roof that is shaped like a sting ray. Inside the large concert hall features two levels and a stage that is linked to the exterior through a large oval window. The founder of the avant-garde firm future systems, died last week at 71.
The concert stage backdrop in the below rendering is actually a window. Beautiful.

Football Now And Then is one of many sweet cartoons done by the great, and I believe still very frozen, Walt Disney. This little beauty came out in 1953. To illustrate the differences between Football Now and Then a grandfather imaginatively details a game between the Moderns and the Oldtimers.

I heard about the ecofont some time ago through my Dutch friend Arjan. I’m still not sure how I feel about it or if I’m entirely sold. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a good idea and am glad to see all this green propaganda take on other applications other than bringing your own grocery bags.
The ecofont is the creation of SPRANQ a creative communications studio in Utrecht, Netherlands. The group set out to find a computer typeface which would conserve more ink than traditional typefaces. They experimented with designs making the letter thinner, reducing them to just outlines and other methods until they fund that removing small circles from each letter was determined to be the best solution. The typeface uses 20% less ink than a traditional font.

I like this idea, though my battle with this font is mainly a visual battle. I struggle with the idea of having to read more than 3 pages of punctured Verdana. When I first saw it, I was honestly pissed off looking at the poor shot-gunned typeface. But I get it, the point is to use less ink. Yet I can’t help but wonder why HP or someone else hasn’t made available an eco friendly ink. I think this attempt along with other eco printing efforts could possibly help bring down ink and paper consumption. Not to mention, I, and all the typography maniacs will be at peace knowing that Verdana has not been turned into Swiss cheese.
SPRANQ understands that their font won’t solve the problem of waste in printings, but they hope it at least raises awareness. So please, feel free to test it out and share your thoughts.

After 23 years of brain-aided communication, the much-admired, much copied studio, The Designers Republic closed for business on Tuesday.
“I’m looking out the window and it’s a lovely sunny day – as it always is in Sheffield – and I think there are a lot of plus points. The Republic is dead… long live the Republic”
