A clock for identity designers

Last month, I wrote about the day I spent obsessively chronicling all the brands, logos, identities and symbols – all 1,035 – that I interact with throughout the day. This research was done for a project I was working on at the time in the Visual Communication Design program at Arizona State University under Professor Al Sanft.

The assignment came in three parts:
1 Pick a profession, design a clock for it
2 Make the clock’s packaging – retail or shipping
3 Contact people in the field with questions to better understand the profession

I chose to design a clock for identity designers. I thought this concept was particularly appropriate since identity designers must be aware of all the work surrounding them throughout their day. This clock serves as a reminder that we are constantly enveloped by brands. (I got the original idea from Jane’s brand-timeline portrait. However, I always had a hard time believing the original post, or its responses, were complete. In fact, I’m not even convinced MY assessment is complete. If I could write faster, I’m sure I could have documented more.)

To fulfill the third requirement, I sent a list of questions to some great identity designers from the local and national community. I was lucky to hear back from the likes of Michael Bierut (Pentagram), Armin Vit (UnderConsideration), Chermayeff and Geismar and David Rengifo (Rain – a local design firm). Every Monday morning for the next month, I will be posting their responses to this blog. Keep checking back.

Update:
Some people have requested prints of the poster. Details on how to get one can be found here: A Poster for Identity Designers

Wow, that is impressive!
and you are right, mine is not a complete catalogue of all the brands I use in one day. I made that decision after I started recording the brands I was using and decided it would be too confusing and I really wanted to tell a story with by brand timeline rather then a true analysis of all the brands I used.
