Nerds prepare: Lion’s Gate to release a Zork movie

UPDATE: Hey, did you know gullible isn’t in the dictionary? My bad.

And, of course, Morgan Freeman is narrating.

From what I can gather, Zork was one of the first interactive fiction computer games. Players navigate through the Zork world by entering text commands. The movie, expected to be released in 2009, is set in a first-person perspective. It will be filmed in full text video.

Lion’s Gate CEO Beverly Crocker explains “it’ll be like Morgan Freeman is sitting behind you reading the game as you play the perfect game. We think it’ll be a dream come true for most Zorkers or Zorkies or whatever they call themselves.” The question is: are there enough Zorkinos out there to make the opening night worth the money spent hiring Mr Freeman?

The designer in me finds this to be quite interesting:

The biggest challenge was to determine what text color to use. We’ve experimented with amber on black, green on black and white on black.  So far the test audiences have reacted most favorably to green on black.

The studio promises that this will be the most faithful video game to reproduction ever made.

I think the idea of making a movie of a text-based adventure game is a misdirected effort, considering that the entire sport of these types of games comes from the choose your own adventure style of play. If mr Freeman is going to be verb-nouning me for the entire movie, i.e. “drop all but sarcasm” or “pick up popcorn and place in mouth” etc, I don’t know if it will come across well. Makes me want to see it though, weird. Maybe I’ll take an ipod and thereby mute mr freeman. :)
